During the three years after the death of Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams, Willie Clark was found guilty of murder on Thursday. Clark, 26, faces 21 counts, including two counts of first degree murder.
After 11 days of testimony from more than 40 witnesses, the jury deliberated for about 12 hours over three days before reaching a guilty verdict. Clark now faces life in prison.
According to the indictment, Clark was involved in a dispute with people in the group of friends on New Year’s Williams (2007) party, and then was one of two gunmen who riddled Hummer limousine Williams, to a white Chevy Tahoe. Clark will be held in the Denver area jail, where he still faces another, unrelated murder charges.
Among the witnesses who testified against Clark is a former teammate Brandon Marshall and Elvis Dumervil. Marshall said that Clark was in a fight outside the club, and said he still tormented by the ordeal. Star witness, however, was a man named Daniel Harris, who went by the nickname of “horses”. Harris is the only one who identified Clark as the shooter. Harris was already serving a life sentence for other cases, but was shortened to five years in exchange for his testimony.
As a result of judicial decisions, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen gave the following statement:
“Nothing can bring Darrent Williams returned or alleviate the suffering of (his mother) Rosalind and her grandchildren. But after three long years, very nice to see the closure brought to this case. This process is already very difficult for the Williams family, friends friends and teammates, this community, and the whole organization of the Denver Broncos.
“I commend the long hard work of Denver and the Denver Police Department, District Attorney. I also like to thank the Denver community for the incredible support that both Williams and Broncos family has been unimaginable tragedy.
“Darrent’s legacy will live for all of us in the organization of the Broncos, and the excellent work done every day in the Darrent Williams Memorial Teen Center is a tribute to the impact in this community. Our hearts still go to all the Williams family.
